Q. “Coordination is the essence of management”. Explain

Ans.The work assigned to different departments, units and individuals must be coordinated by all managers at various levels. Without harmony and integration of activities, there is likely to be duplication, overlapping and even chaos in the organization.

Coordination and Planning- Coordination begins right from planning stage where coordination is required between Master Plan and plans of each department.

Coordination and Organizing-At the organizing stage coordination is sought betweenhuman resources and activities to be performed.

Coordination and Staffing- At the organizing stage, coordination is required between human resources, their skills and abilities with the jobs assigned to them.

Coordination and Directing-Directing ensures smooth performance of duties through guiding, supervising and motivating the employees.

Coordination and Controlling-At the controlling stage, coordination is required between Standard performance and actual performance.

Example- Unless goods are produced in adequate quantities and as per the demand of customers by Production department, sales target cannot be achieved by Marketing department and if these departments don’t operate within budget of Finance department, Proper supply of funds is not possible. So, Coordination is required in activities of all departments.
Coordination is, therefore regarded as the essence of management rather than a separate function of management.


Q 2. “Coordination is the orderly arrangement of group efforts to provide unity of action in pursuit of common purpose”. Explain the nature of coordination in the light of above statement.
Ans. Coordination refers to the task of integrating the activities and efforts of different departments, units and divisions of organization to achieve organizational goals efficiently.
Nature /features of coordination are as follows-
Coordination integrates group efforts- Coordination applies to group efforts. It unifies diverse interests into purposeful work activity.

Coordination ensures unity of action. It acts as binding force between the departments and ensures that all action is aimed at achieving goals of the organization.

Coordination is a continuous process.It begins at the planning stage and continues till controlling,It is not a one time function but a continuous process.

Coordination is an all-pervasive function. It is required at all levels of management and in all departments due to the interdependent nature of activities of various departments.

Coordination is the responsibility of all managers-It is the duty of all managers to direct the efforts of all persons to a common goal.

Coordination is a deliberate function- A manager has to coordinate the efforts of different people in a conscious and deliberate manner.

Q. Explain 3Elements of coordination.
Ans. 1. Integration. It means all the diverse and unrelated interests of various groups and individuals should be integratedtogether so as to complete the work efficiently and effectively.

2.Balancing. There should be proper balancing between various activities ofProduction, Purchase, finance and Marketing so that coordination should supplement the activity of each department by the other departments.

3. Timing. It means scheduling of all the activities so that they can be completed within time limit.
